Prep Is The Whole Mood
Self-tanner is rarely ruined by the color alone. It is ruined by elbows, ankles, dry patches, rushed hands, and the hopeful belief that a product can fix uneven prep. Before reaching for something like Beauty by Earth self tanner, give the body a better surface.
Exfoliate gently the day before if your skin tolerates it. Focus on knees, ankles, elbows, and any place where skin catches texture. Shave ahead of time rather than immediately before application if shaving tends to irritate you.
On tanning day, moisturize dry zones lightly first. This keeps them from grabbing too much color.

Use Less Around The Edges
Apply self-tanner in thin sections. Legs, arms, torso, then the places that require delicacy. Use what is left on the mitt for ankles, knees, elbows, hands, and feet. These areas should get a whisper, not a fresh pump.
Blend past the wrist and over the tops of the hands lightly. Wash palms carefully afterward. A clean towel can buff around knuckles and nails if anything looks too concentrated.
Good self-tanner should look like you spent time outside sensibly, not like your joints kept separate plans.
Choose Clothes Like You Mean It
After application, wear loose, dark, washable clothing. Avoid tight waistbands, pale sheets, and impatient sitting positions. If the formula needs time to develop, give it that time.
The first hour is where small mistakes become patterns. Let the product dry fully before layering clothes. Skip heavy body oil until after the tan has developed and rinsed, if the product directions call for rinsing.
Follow the label in front of you. Formulas differ.
Maintain, Do Not Chase
Once the color is where you like it, moisturize daily and exfoliate softly when it begins to fade. Do not keep adding tanner over patchy old color and expect elegance. That is how knees become evidence.
The best self-tan routine is boring in the middle: gentle wash, steady moisture, gradual touch-ups. The drama belongs elsewhere.
